Cloud and Land Surface Interaction (CLASIC) mission

CLASIC logo

Experiment Information:

The Cloud and Land Surface Interaction Campaign (CLASIC) was conducted by the Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program. The primary purpose of CLASIC is to study how land surface processes influence cumulus convection. Most measurements will occur over the ARM Southern Great Plains field site. Low-flying aircraft measured radiation and surface fluxes, while the high-altitude ER-2 provided remote sensing using the CPL, the Cloud Radar System (CRS), and the MODIS Airborne Simulator (MAS). Because the ER-2 is flying the A-Train simulator payload, underflights of the CALIPSO and CloudSat satellites also occurred as part of CLASIC.

ER2 payload

Payload for the validation mission includes the Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL), the Cloud Radar System (CRS), and the MODIS Airborne Simulator (MAS).

NOTICE: Access to CPL data is not restricted. However, we do ask that everyone read and abide by the CPL data usage policy found here: CPL data usage policy. In addition, please bear in mind that satellite teams have their own data usage policies, and they should be contacted before use or publication of validation data.

To inquire about data processing or data availability for the CPL dataset,
please contact Mr. Dennis Hlavka or Mr. William Hart
See 'contacts' page for more information

Matt McGill is the Principal Investigator for the CPL data
