Experiment Information:
The first field deployment for the CPL was the Southern African Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI) campaign in southern Africa during August-September 2000. The purpose of SAFARI was to study the unique climatology of southern Africa, with particular emphasis on biomass burning and other regional emissions. During the SAFARI campaign, the CPL provided data on cloud height and structure as well as aerosol and smoke plume structure. Quantitative optical characteristics of both
clouds and smoke layers were determined. The CPL data will be used in conjunction with other airborne and ground-based instrumentation, as well as satellite data, to quantify and validate the regional emissions. Data
from the SAFARI campaign will be used to understand the linkages between land-atmosphere processes.
